This is where the ancient San hunters migrated to meet the Khoi pastoralists for form the world’s oldest cultural group – the Khoi san. Their presence is powerfully recorded in the rock art that still survives in so many caves and natural overhangs throughout the region. It was here that a 2000 year old Khoi san mummy was recently unearthed – a turning point in uncovering the wisdom of these long forgotten people and also where the icon, Sarah Bartmann, was laid to rest. The modern-day Kouga features Jeffreys Bay, St Francis Bay, Cape St Francis, Humansdorp and the twin valleys of the Langkloof and Gamtoos. If you are looking for the Langkloof you will find it behind the famous Tsitsikamma Mountains between Uniondale and Humansdorp. |
