Langkloof - The Fruit Route on Route 62

Known as the Valley of a Thousand Vistas, the Langkloof lies in amongst Tsitsikamma Mountains. It is a paradise for the nature lover and eco-tourists with more than 30 idyllic hiking trails, including the famous Formosa Peak Trail, mountain caves decorated by the earliest and most ancient of people and 4 x 4 routes. Visit a game farm, enjoy mountain biking, fresh water angling, pool hopping or micro-light flights. This is literally the Big Apple of South Africa’s agricultural industry & various farms are open to the public. Experience legendary country hospitality as you join in with farming activities. A proud part of Route 62 – the World’s Longest Wine Route – the Langkloof boasts beautiful blossoms and flowers. It is everyone’s ideal breakaway.

Kouga Region

The Kouga Region is a unique meeting ground of natural phenomena and human cultures, a place that retains a feeling of undeveloped natural beauty and great tranquility. Here the winter and summer rainfall regions meet, creating a temperate climate in which the lush, evergreen forests of the Tsitsikamma meet the Fynbos of the Cape Floral Kingdom and the semi arid Klein Karoo scrub meets the more luxuriant Valley Bushveld. The mountains of the untouched Baviaanskloof Wilderness area and the Gamtoos and Langkloof Valleys form a fertile passage way where the warm dry atmosphere of the Karoo meets the moist air of the eastern seaboard, creating an ideal climate. This is also the place where the warm currents of the Indian Ocean meet and mingle with the waters of the cold Atlantic – creating unique conditions for an unusually high diversity of marine life.

This is where the ancient San hunters migrated to meet the Khoi pastoralists for form the world’s oldest cultural group – the Khoi san. Their presence is powerfully recorded in the rock art that still survives in so many caves and natural overhangs throughout the region. It was here that a 2000 year old Khoi san mummy was recently unearthed – a turning point in uncovering the wisdom of these long forgotten people and also where the icon, Sarah Bartmann, was laid to rest. The modern-day Kouga features Jeffreys Bay, St Francis Bay, Cape St Francis, Humansdorp and the twin valleys of the Langkloof and Gamtoos.

If you are looking for the Langkloof you will find it behind the famous Tsitsikamma Mountains between Uniondale and Humansdorp.
